{"id":982,"date":"2009-03-31T21:13:01","date_gmt":"2009-03-31T10:13:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bottlesandchains.com\/?p=982"},"modified":"2009-03-31T21:13:01","modified_gmt":"2009-03-31T10:13:01","slug":"one-for-the-shoeshine-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bottlesandchains.com\/?p=982","title":{"rendered":"One For The Shoeshine Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It doesn&#8217;t always have to be about bikes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>One For The Shoeshine Man<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The balance is preserved by the snails climbing the<br \/>\nSanta Monica cliffs;<br \/>\nthe luck is in walking down Western Avenue<br \/>\nand having the girls in a massage<br \/>\nparlor holler at you, &#8220;Hello Sweetie!&#8221;<br \/>\nthe miracle is having 5 women in love<br \/>\nwith you at the age of 55,<br \/>\nand the goodness is that you are only able<br \/>\nto love one of them.<br \/>\nthe gift is having a daughter more gentle<br \/>\nthan you are, whose laughter is finer<br \/>\nthan yours.<br \/>\nthe peace comes from driving a<br \/>\nblue 1967 Volks through the streets like a<br \/>\nteenager, radio tuned to The Host Who Loves You<br \/>\nMost, feeling the sun, feeling the solid hum<br \/>\nof the rebuilt motor<br \/>\nas you needle through traffic.<br \/>\nthe grace is being able to like rock music,<br \/>\nsymphony music, jazz . . .<br \/>\nanything that contains the original energy of<br \/>\njoy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">and the probability that returns<br \/>\nis the deep blue low<br \/>\nyourself flat upon yourself<br \/>\nwithin the guillotine walls<br \/>\nangry at the sound of the phone<br \/>\nor anybody&#8217;s footsteps passing;<br \/>\nbut the other probability&#8211;<br \/>\nthe lilting high that always follows&#8211;<br \/>\nmakes the girl at the checkstand in the<br \/>\nsupermarket look like<br \/>\nMarilyn<br \/>\nlike Jackie before they got her Harvard lover<br \/>\nlike the girl in high school that we<br \/>\nall followed home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">there is that which helps you believe<br \/>\nin something else besides death:<br \/>\nsomebody in a car approaching<br \/>\non a street too narrow,<br \/>\nand he or she pulls aside to let you<br \/>\nby, or the old fighter Beau Jack<br \/>\nshining shoes<br \/>\nafter blowing the entire bankroll<br \/>\non parties<br \/>\non women<br \/>\non parasites,<br \/>\nhumming, breathing on the leather,<br \/>\nworking the rag<br \/>\nlooking up and saying:<br \/>\n&#8220;what the hell, I had it for<br \/>\nwhile. that beats the<br \/>\nother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I am bitter sometimes<br \/>\nbut the taste has often been<br \/>\nsweet. it&#8217;s only that I&#8217;ve<br \/>\nfeared to say it. it&#8217;s like<br \/>\nwhen your woman says,<br \/>\n&#8220;tell me you love me,&#8221; and<br \/>\nyou can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">if you see me grinning from<br \/>\nmy blue Volks<br \/>\nrunning a yellow light<br \/>\ndriving straight into the sun<br \/>\nI will be locked in the<br \/>\narms of a<br \/>\ncrazy life<br \/>\nthinking of trapeze artists<br \/>\nof midgets with big cigars<br \/>\nof a Russian winter in the early 40&#8217;s<br \/>\nof Chopin with his bag of Polish soil<br \/>\nof an old waitress bringing me an extra<br \/>\ncup of coffee and laughing<br \/>\nas she does so.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">the best of you<br \/>\nI like more than you think.<br \/>\nthe others don&#8217;t count<br \/>\nexcept that they have fingers and heads<br \/>\nand some of them eyes<br \/>\nand most of them legs<br \/>\nand all of them<br \/>\ngood and bad dreams<br \/>\nand way to go.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">justice is everywhere and it&#8217;s working<br \/>\nand the machine guns and frogs<br \/>\nand the hedges will tell you<br \/>\nso.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><em>Charles Bukowski<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It doesn&#8217;t always have to be about bikes&#8230;
