For those that haven’t heard, I’ll be returning to the Southern Isle for six day in September.. and of course, I have a radventure planned. Here is the wood.. Rain or shine, on Monday 14 September I’m planning to cycle from my parents home in Margate to Ouse, overnight, then return the next day.
Not sure on the exact route, but after much discussion, the following route seems the most likely: Hobart, Rosetta, Collinsvale, Molesworth, New Norfolk, Plenty, Glenora, Westerway, Ellendale, Ouse, Hamilton, Elderslie, Broadmarsh, Brighton, Teatree, Richmond, Cambridge, Rosny, Hobart. According to Google Map, it’s about 230km’s return (approx +/-) …not exactly huge, but enough to wet the palette.
The overnight arrangements? not sure. …but there are a few options, the two best being; a) ‘camping out’ and b) ‘a room in the local pub’ ..but should you choose to follow the Faust Coppi cycling regime option c) ‘the footpath outside the Ouse Hotel’ may suffice? Haha, nah.. Reckon I’ll pack a tent. Campfires rule. Open to discussion on this one..
Any punters want to come along for the ride?

Jeffery’s Track = Rocky and Steep. At night, a moonlit Lyle Highway would be a good experience, as would the road through Fentonbury. Seems to be Autumn all year around in that area. From there, the Southern ascent of Brown’s Hill (down into Meadowbank) is doable on a SS. Coming the other way – not so much 🙂
if you delay it to the 16th then I’m in!!
Yo Liam, sorry mate, no can do.. I go home in the early am of the 17th.. so no dice. 🙁
What’s on the 14th/15th? Uni action?
i got a block of 5 night shifts finishing on the 14th night (I work full time these days). will try and wrangle a change if you cant be flexible as looks like a top trip! after todays winter challenge I’ve fallen back in love with flying down hillsides again.
I’m in if Liams in. What is the destination in OUSE?
Is this instead of or in addition to the Eggs and Bacon Bay trip that was proposed?
Qantas say’s I can’t be flexible on the dates.. Sorry Liam, 14th and 15th it is.
Dave, this is another ride. The Egg and Bacon trip will go ahead pre Christmas yo. Keen to come for a spin?
Gus, yep Ouse is the destination via the backcountry roads. Lingy has suggested we climb up to Collinsvale and descend into the Derwent Valley from there.. Stirling idea.
Confirmed riders thus far: Benny, Bucks and Lingy.
Likely route:
Hobart, Rosetta, Collinsvale, Molesworth, New Norfolk, Plenty, Glenora, Westerway, Ellendale, Ouse.
Overnight in Ouse and return to Hobart via:
Ouse, Hamilton, Elderslie, Broadmarsh, Brighton, Teatree, Richmond, Cambridge, Rosny, Hobart.
Lingy will be on the one geared Bianchi and I’ll be riding the similarly single geared Surly. Who knows what Bucks will bring to the party? Zipp 808s?? Maybe..
Come on MP, John must owe you some days off by now?
fuck this. if you cant be flexible, I shall be flexible. confirm me in come hell or high water or the sack. if I can get it off, then mischa has no choice in the matter! p.s I will be riding a giant trance with dual suspension so it better be rough (my excuse – I will have just worked a night shift. the later start time the better.. hint hint).
Ok, later it is. I’ll have to haul myself out of Margate, meet Bucks (and maybe Surly Dave as well) in Kingston, ride up and over the Bonnet to Taroona, have a cup of tea at the Chateau Le Correy before cycling towards Hobart and catching Lingy.. Then we’ll hit the road.. Haha.
Don’t worry about the lack of sleep, just get a little Fausto Coppi or Tom Simpson on us eh?…ah, and rough? Is potholes in tarmac and gravel verged roads rough enough for ya? Mate, bring the skinny wheeled steed..
Mischa.. I think Liam just threw a glove on the ground.
Unlike Liam I won’t be soft and will be bringing my touring fixed. But bring on both roughness and mud.
YEAH! Gus! That is the ticket! It is a touring bike after all… Would love to see the Cargo Bike on the mission, you could carry everyones camping gear and beer for the trip.
Ok, I created a Facebook event for this so we can better co-ordinate meeting times, who’s coming and what to bring etc etc.. you can navigate to it via the ‘BnC on Facebook’ link on the sidebar menu..
Can’t wait for this event!
I is well jelus 🙁
Kiwi, can’t you take a day off the dole?
I’m heading up to wagga for uni that week.
I really would like to come, but it just ain’t an option. I will be jealous.
the question I ask of mischa, are what are his true colours. As a new commer to this BnC buisness I cant help but wonder if we have a serious conflict of interest at hand here. Secretly the poor bloke is so controlled by the man that anything outside the sphere of bike product is not cool. I’m gonna be leaving my poor patients to die to go on this ride, I’m sure John would survive a day all on his own fixing bikes!
I read Liam Cs above post to Mishmash who immediately suggested there may be a ‘hostile take-over bid’ brewing in the wings..
Mish then went to to state that she would sell Liam C 30% of her B’n’C corporate shares.. Liam would then only need to increase his support base another 5% to be in a position to challenge for the leadership.
We live in interesting times.
You guys are somewhat confused about how BnC works. It’s not a leadership, it’s a dictatorship. Get back in line.
Doesn’t Liam already have HTH.
Would a merger give us HBTNHC or BHNTCH.
Bit of a mouthful.
With Mischa’s very Marie Antonette-esque comment above(“let them eat cake” is the dicatorial gist the troops are hearing) ..Liam has countered, promising to provide those joining his “B’n’C revolt” with healthy apple’s pre each B’n’C ride. This is inline with Healthy Transport Hobart’s mantra.. Collect enough and we’ll be able to make our own apple-cider! Back to B’n’Cs DIY roots eh?
Now, the question is “do we like cider..?”
Mmm… Cider.
You guys enjoy the apples. I’ll stick with the VK and beers.
As for the ride, if little ben can work, then I’ll be there.
Mmm… beer. Don’t mind if i do.
Qui Oui is reaching new heights of username inventiveness.
Can’t top that one. Yet.
Ok, the general call is for rooms at the pub.. something about ‘wet’ and ‘cold’ was mentioned before the pub concensus was mooted..
Alright, called the Lachlan Pub at Ouse and spoke with the Publican.. The wood is:
Twin room – $70
Double room – $70
Single room – $50
So I went ahead and booked two Twin rooms already.. So there is three beds up for grabs at $35 a pop. Do people wanna call dibs? Thought Lingy might want to book a Double for him and the family? (Leave you to sort that eh Lingy?) ..not exactly a bustling time of year for the Pub so don’t sweat.. we can grab more rooms as we need ’em. Pub also does counter meals! Sorted!
This should feed your fire for the trip guys. Some great pics here, from a Fuel TV documentary which really inspires me to ride and combine two of my passions, bikes and skateboards. To think that these guys have never really ridden anywhere in their life, and they take on a 500km journey in NZ of all places to go ride skateparks and camp the whole way. If you get a chance to see it, I recommend it. The filming is amazing and it really shows how the simple pleasure of riding a bike can be found in anyone.
Stills from the show are here…

Brendo, cheers for the link mate.
BnC’er Dave McCaig did something similiar..
He toured Australia on a fixed gear KHS Flight, fully loaded with panniers and towing a BMX! HE rode skatepark to skatepark across the southeastern states! Such a radical trip..
any photos or blogs of it? Sounds radical (not in a “Wow! radical manouvre dude” kinda way).
Did you see Rick McCranks “NZ” bike cap, if only he had the BnC Suicidal one 🙂
Mate, tagged you into Davey McCaig’s trip pics on the Fbook.. Did your BnC Cap arrive? Stoked with mine eh.
Shit yeah Brendo, those shots are awesome. I love that kind of stuff. Radventure material for sure.
Radventure on the way to Ouse MP. Maybe we’ll do some grass-track racing or street sprints after a few in the Lachlan Hotel?
Bring ya camera MP, reckon you’ll be able to produce some images that will inspire others as has Benji Wagners pictures.
Can’t wait for this mission. Pulled my rain gear out of hibernation, just-in-case..
RAD!!!
BnC cap is awesome. Got it last week.
Good to hear!
I’m pretty much locked in for this shin-dig, and I reckon I’ll be there rain or shine.
