Queenstown, New Zealands ‘Mountain Capital’. I’m 8kgs over weight, haven’t ridden a mountain bike in anger in 12mths and I arrived with a singlespeed.. ‘Oh God, what have I done?’
First mountain bike ride. 452 meters of vertical climbing, 2 meters of cycling, 450 meters of walking.. ‘Oh God, what have I done?’
What sick, twisted fucker thought holding a singlespeed event in this steep ass town?

Well, the first thing you want to do is “Cowboy the fuck up”
Sound advice.
too many gears for too long in my opinion.
DNF. Worst race result to date. Of the four Aussies entered only one finished. One mother fkn hard course.
What’d you expect? Molehills?
Find 7 mile park it is awesome, as good as whistler. it’s on a beach, so sick, ask a shop how to get there.

The thing about mountain biking is that gears help you get up hills and ride a variety of trails. They’re not some kind of evil machine that has no place on bikes in general.
7 Mile is where the NZud SS Champs were held on the weekend.. The winner Garth (current Australian SS Champ and 2008 NZud SS Champ) said in his acceptance speech: ‘The trails were wicked, and not wicked in an awesome sense but wicked in the cruel sense’. Hardest course I’ve ridden on a SS. Reckon Rob and I were in the minority on 26inches and possibly the only guys rocking 32×18.. Alot of big BIG cogs kicking about. 32×21 was pretty common.
Sorry I’ve forgotten what hills are, haven’t seen one since I became a Novocastrian.
