Support The Sandy Bay Bike Lanes

When: Tuesday 17th August, 2010
Time: 3.30pm
Cnr of Marieville Esplanade and Sandy Bay Rd

Calling all cyclists!

Come along to support the proposed cycling and walking facilities between Marieville Esplanade and Cartwright Reserve. These world class facilities are facing opposition from a small group of residents along Sandy Bay Road.

Currently only those fast and confident enough to deal with the other traffic cycle on Sandy Bay Road so large sections of our community who wish to cycle with their children to school, to work or the shops are excluded for riding bikes because the lack of suitable infrastructure.

The resident are set to lose kerbside parking if it goes ahead – the wider Hobart community will lose a fantastic opportunity to cycle the primary route for cyclists to and from Kingborough and the myriad of benefits that flow from this if it doesn’t.

It is important for you to support this proposal in every way you can so come along on Tuesday but most importantly register your support with Hobart City Council here

The road space we all pay for as tax payers is too valuable a resource for private car parking.

  1. This proposal has the potential to benefit the entire community and is far too important to allow to fail because of vested private interests. Roads are not built for the storage of private vehicles. They are to facilitate the passage of people and goods. Bicycles, as a legitimate part of the traffic, need dedicated operating space and deserve to be encouraged because of the multiple positive benefits they offer to individuals, society and the environment. Install the Sandy Bay lanes!

  2. Good on you Neil. You are absolutely spot on. What’s more if it goes ahead more or less as proposed it sets an critical precedent that Councils across the State and to a certain extent the State Gov cannot ignore. If it doesn’t go ahead or is watered down to be next to useless we go back into the dark ages of cycle infrastructure development in Tas.
FYI I am doing a cycling talkback with Tim Cox specifically on the SBR bike lanes 31st 11am if you get the chance ring in 1300 222 936 or SMS on 199 22 936 or email tasmornings@your.abc.net.au to state exactly what you have in your post.
    Cheers

    Tim
