Down but not out

It’ never good to hear about someone going down hard when they’re riding. Andy White had a heavy stack last week and is currently in hospital recovering after breaking his back. All’s in working order apparently, but word is he’s very lucky to be moving. Send out some good vibes for a quick recovery. Hope you’re back at it soon Andy!

A few more details here…

  1. Full on eh! I read this on Dan’s Shifter Bike site.. Geez, gotta watch those QR’s eh?

There was a guy at Uni a few years back who had this crazy scar from above his eyebrow that snakes up over his forehead into his hair line.. He got it a a Mtn descent when his QR came undone and the front wheel came off.. the disk rotor chopped him in the head!! about 2cm lower and it would have been his eye!!

Anyway, I dropped Andy an email eh.. hope he’s back on the pushie and building soon..

Got an update on my new ride.. arrives @ Treadlies next wednesday now.. so should be built up and ready for that weekend! YeuW! Better print up that spoke card Mischa! Yeah!

  2. Had a look at Clinton’s two Fixies on Monday night.. He has a super tidy McBains built up with Campagnolo with gold chain and full gold wheelset! Spokes and all! Haha! Super pimp..

but his 2nd frame (not built yet) is another McBains number with chromed stays, lugs and fork and gold tubes! How fkn pimp would that look with the gold anodized chain and wheelset on it?! Haha! Yeah.. the full Run DMC 1982 look! Yeuw!

He’s keen also for some street rides eh.. bloody oath he’s running a big gear tho.. 92!! I went for a spin up the street on it.. WHOA! Fast as! Scary to try and pull up!!

Soon as I’m up an running I’ll give you a bell for a ride..

  3. “Yeah.. the full Run DMC 1982 look! Yeuw!”

Can this be the new Bottles and Chains look please? everyone with matching tracksuits and addidas shoes?

  4. 92? Surely not for street riding? That’d be impossible! It’d take you a good 10 minutes to speed up and slow down, haha. Gotta chill on that business. We’re running bout 64 gear inches, it’s all about the sprints.

Is he riding it out and about yet?

  5. nah, 92 for track.. He pirated the front ring off his Dads old track bike, it fkn massive eh.. H3e’s not out and about riding yet, waiting for a 2nd wheelset for street and smaller rings..

Gunna paint the Steamroller straight up.. Organised Grip Sport in Melbs to do it.. Can’t have Maroon, it’s just wrong.. any suggestions for a new colour..? Stealth black? Firie Red? Pimpin’ Pink? c’mon hit me up with some ideas..

    Think Tone Loc..

  6. Have posession of one fixed wheel bike.. rode it sat arvo and ah, well the ‘engine braking’ style of stopping cained my legs! Fark, the front of my thighs are fkd! Sore as! And how the hell do you skid?

    Loving it eh!

  7. Nice work Ben! My legs were ruined last Monday and Tuesday too.

I’ve had mine for just over a week and learned rudimentary skidding after a few days. Lean forward (balls over the stem!), pull up with your leading foot and push back with your trailing foot. Feels strange at first, but hey, so did riding without training wheels.

We should go for a roll this weekend, nothing too strenuous, maybe just a short cruise. Whaddaya say?

  8. Hey Liam,

Mate working 9-5 this coming Sat/Sun @ ABC.. but could do a roll straight after work? Or Friday night around town then Knoppies! Yeuw!

Spewing it’s raining 2day.. waiting for a brake in the showers so I can whip out of Uni for a practise..

Nearly sussed track stands (but don’t quote me on that! Haha!) Ah, so strapped or clipped would help for skidding then eh? I’m riding borrowed flats at the mo.. might swap ’em out for my mtb clips then if being attached helps!

I’m heaps cycle fit eh but this back peddling
to slow down cains my legs! I rode from Southern Cross TV to Salamanca and back on Sat arvo and afterwards I was fkd! felt sooo wrong to be sore! Haha!

  9. Good times!

Yeah it’s pretty strange for a while, but it won’t take you long to get sorted I reckon.

Get some clips or clipless onto it quicksmart if you’re riding brakeless mate. You’ll need them to skid.

Trackstands are a bit weird but once you nail them they’re so much easier on fixed than free.

Keen for a ride, maybe a post-work roll on Friday’s the way to go.

We need a forum all up in this business, haha.

  10. Ripped out my old 4X Crank Bros Mallets and strapped ’em to the Steamroller and yep, skid it did! Trackstands? Well, I’m workin’ on ’em!

I’ve done two runs over the Bonnet now.. One each way (Margate/Uni) and finding the 74.65 gear inches ok but skidding isn’t exactly easy.. I’m told a lower gear inch would make it easier?

A local Fixie forum? Hmmn, I like it!

I finish work at 6pm on Friday so can do a town roll after then..? Or after 5pm Sat??

Also Mischa, Ben Korkmaz told me you’re into stencil art? Yeah?? I’ve been making stencils and making t-shirts for awhile.. EMO Black ones with skulls on ’em! Haha! Nah, ..yeah actually!! Haha!

  11. Yeah 74 is pretty heavy. Probably ok for your ride I guess given the distance, although that hill must be a bit of a push. I’m rocking 64gi, as are liam and nic. Great for quick acceleration and smooth riding through the city, and easy enough for all the hills.

I finish at 6 on Friday as well, I’m easy either way. Drop me an e-mail and let me know what you’re keen for, I’ll razz the other lads.

I haven’t done any street art for a long while now, I’m a bit slack. It’s good stuff though, and I was loving it when I was doing it. I really should pick up the knife again!

  12. No dramas Mischa, will txt you from work 2day.. hopefully I’ll be done by 6pm eh.. (Working on Colllectors @ ABC 2day.. could run into overtime) Ben
