Smooth Cuts

My love of Rapha and their very stylish aesthetic is fairly well documented on this here website. Smooth as hell, with a classic style and ridiculous price tag to match, they make cycling products that are a step above many of the branding-heavy gear we see daily. My favourite thing about their website has always been the Features section, with a heap of stories that usually have me inspired to be out at 5am, turning pedals and sweating onto my handlebars (never really translates to actual results, but I’ll be a lazy bastard til the bitter end). Recently they’ve been doing a heap of stuff in their Continental series, documenting rides across North America.

The latest of this is a series of videos covering their riding of the Tour of California route. Complete with trendy beards, tattoos, black bikes and pink accents, the riders trundle along putting in plenty of KMs. It’s all shot in the indie-film style you’d expect, and I can’t help being a bit of a sucker for it. It really does a good job of capturing that feeling you so often get when you’re out on the bike. You may be out with a group, but it’s you and you alone who’s pushing your pedals over and over, and your mates aren’t going to help. There’s a reflective solitude in this, even if pain is usually the only thing staring back into your eyes.  I guess having all the right gear and clothing helps make it all the more comfortable, but the truth is, that feeling is out there and waiting for you all the time.

So I’m going to sit here and dream of epic, painful rides and glory through suffering, softened by clothing aimed at dentists and surgeons. Tomorrow I’ll jump on the rust bucket out the front, with the buckled rear wheel that rubs on the chainstays and the brakes that barely work, and somewhere between here and the beach, I’ll find that same feeling.

‘Look Ma, no brakes” – Tahune Race Report

damo

Saturday dawned with an air of expectancy.. Who would claim the B’n’C ‘fit-as-fk’ title at this years Tahune Marathon? Hmmn, not an easy one to punt on with Bucks, Damo, Turner Burner and Simon Edwards all lining up in the 100k and Mischa, Pete Crocker and Michael Eastwood in the 50k.. Some serious fkn punters there yo!

Being Tasmania, it rained.. alot. The boys in the 100 all jumped at the gun and chased Sid Taberlays wheel for the first 20k.. “Look Ma, I’m keeping up with Sid!”.. yeah right, the next time I saw Sid (30k mark) the nearest punter was a good 2minutes back. Bucks and Damo smashed it up early in the race keeping in touch with the leading riders but then Bucklys tight arsed ways caught up with him and he flatted twice.. mighta been something to do with the bald tyres eh Bucks? Damo, like everyone else, ran out of brake pads at the 35k mark and had to ghetto style brake by placing his foot on the rear wheel.. This may have slown him up just a tad. I heard a rumour he ran down most of the hills? The weather was truely appalling. Hosing down is a good description.  The entire Uncle Rays team (who had looked so resplendant in their new team kit at the start) pulled out at the 60k mark leaving only the Turner Burner on course.. I think the only reason Clint kept riding was because he had sooo much mud in his eyes he didn’t see the other guys stop. I’m not going to guess at the results but Damo finished close to the front (5th?) and Bucks, Simon and Turner finished mid field.. champion effort given the conditions.

In the 50 Mischa smashed it up and finished without any dramas.. as did Pete but Michael again pulled one out of the bag riding in 5th. If you are keen to see some pics of the event take a squiz at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/photo_search.php?oid=5896591318&view=all

Final Solution?

s3x_colors_2008-11-20

Hobart has hills. Lot of ’em. Big ones too. Vertical topography is a limiting enviromnetal factor that keeps the southern capitals SS and Fixed cycling population in check. Survival of the fittest and all that jazz. Pushing ‘one gear’  means selecting a small gear for the ‘ups’, and if you choose to ride fixed, this also means spinning like fk on the ‘downs’.

Sunrace Sturmey Archer is offering a solution. The S3X Three Speed Fixed Hub. The gearing range is as follows:

  • 1st Gear -37.5%
  • 2nd Gear – -25%
  • 3rd Gear – Direct Drive

Will this three speed hub shift the limiting environmental factors causing a exponential grow in ‘Hipsters’ down south?  I predict the following will happen: Hunners will be able to ride on hung-over days. The Bonnet will be conquered more frequently. Jessie will still ride on the footpath. Liam will move home from flat Melbourne. Grundy will buy two. Nic will buy lycra bib knicks. ‘I want the one I can’t have’

fixed-cross1

Meat is Murder, so is this heat.

Poke the nozzle of your partners hairdryer into your mouth and turn it on.. there you go, now you’ve experienced summertime cycling in Centralia. Well, almost.. while we’re in the bathroom playing with the hairdryer, turn the ceiling mounted heatlamp up to 100, set the indoor trainer up beneath it and we’re getting closer to the oven-like sensation of riding out here…

Never thought I’d think it, but I’m lusting after some mud. Cold mud. Full blown winter muddy mud. Roost up your back and in your eye type mud.   …and some Cyclocross. Cyclocross in the mud. Yeah, thats it.. mmmmnnn.  Fixed of course, no gears to clog up, a simple ‘pedal harder’ style of racing. All day I’ve been thinking about that ..er, ‘skaty’ feeling of 28c knobblies trying to hook up in mud. That little squirt of adrenalin that comes with the uncertainty that you and your bike are going to remain the correct side up. I want that.

fixed-cross2

For the first time in Australia (as far as I know) a full blown Cyclocross series is being held. Details of the series is availble at: http://www.tailwindpromotions.com.au/cyclocrossaustralia/ What interests me most about this series is the inaugral National Cyclocross Championships that are being held at Peppers Hidden Vale on the 4th of October this year. There is no specific singlespeed or fixed gear category but with classes ranging from Elite to D-grade I’m sure DFL won’t be on the cards. Clint, Lingy.. Does this crank your chains boys? Maybe we should send a B’n’C team over for this one.. we have the skin-suits.

Anyway back to my walkman and Smiths cassette. Out
